Choose the harbour area when watching the boats, a waterside meal and time around the waterfront are the main reasons to stay. A central hotel can support this routine even without a harbour view. If you are travelling to Lundy, establish the correct port before paying for a conveniently placed mainland night.

Good for: Couples and visitors planning a harbour-led evening.

Before you choose: Working harbour routes and boat boarding have their own access arrangements. A hotel nearby does not remove the need to check the vessel, boarding time and return port.

Wilder Road and Runnacleave Road

The Dilkhusa Grand and Carlton give two hotel formats around the western seafront and Runnymede Gardens area. Compare the actual room, meals and access rather than treating the lift symbol as the end of the discussion. This is a useful central base when you want several short outings with returns to the room.

Before you choose: Both properties identify bedrooms with stairs despite having lifts. Carlton has no sea views. Agree the exact room in writing if steps, bathroom layout or the outlook determine your choice.

Hele Bay and a separate cove setting

Hele offers an alternative eastern base when a smaller bay matters more than walking out into the main harbour evening. Its sand-and-shingle shore and nearby corn mill support a local day. Compare accommodation there separately; the two hotels on this shortlist remain in central Ilfracombe.

Good for: Families or couples who want a cove-focused stay.

Before you choose: The Hillsborough walking route is a hill outing, not a level promenade connection. Check buses or arrange road transport if you want to divide evenings and beach time between the two areas.

Dilkhusa’s family category specifies a queen and single bed for two adults and one child. Larger families need a separately agreed arrangement. At Hele, fit the beach interval to conditions and energy rather than adding a hill walk simply to connect it with the harbour.
