More about staying in Moray

Moray offers a choice between town life, a coastal holiday and a Speyside village stay. Elgin is the practical town anchor, Cullen puts the coast into the daily routine, and Craigellachie gives a whisky-and-river itinerary a smaller setting. These are different reasons to stay overnight, not just places to pass through on a driving circuit. Choose where you want to eat and spend the evening, then plan one main outing rather than crossing the county repeatedly.

FIND YOUR BASE

Choose your base in Moray

Elgin: a town base with independent choices

Elgin works when you want a town around the hotel and a day that can mix local history with shops and meals. The Mansefield provides a local hotel option with different room categories. Give Elgin time on arrival, then select a specific cathedral, cultural or countryside visit for the following day rather than treating the town only as a place to collect the car.

Good for: A town-centred short break with flexible dining plans.

Before you choose: Check the selected room’s building, floor and bathroom. An Elgin address does not establish that every coastal or distillery visit is convenient without onward transport, particularly for an evening return.

Cullen: stay for the coastal rhythm

Cullen is the choice when the coast should shape the stay from morning to evening. The Seafield Arms places the hotel within the town, with main-building and annexe accommodation that need comparing carefully. Leave time for the town and shore, and choose a suitable coastal route using current conditions instead of turning the day into a string of distant stops.

Good for: A coastal break with a town hotel and a locally planned meal.

Before you choose: The hotel has several separate room buildings. Its first-floor Carriage Cottage is not a ground-floor family cottage, while the Lower Mews bathroom description does not apply to every room.

Craigellachie: concentrate on Speyside

Craigellachie gives a whisky-focused visit a village base near the Spey, with the Craigellachie Hotel supporting an evening that can stay local. Choose a particular distillery or cooperage visit and arrange it directly. The village is distinct from Aberlour despite the postal address, and a tour should leave time to enjoy the river setting rather than determine every hour.

Good for: A Speyside food, whisky or river-country stay.

Before you choose: Arrange transport before any tasting. The hotel’s listed room categories are for two adults; confirm children or extra guests instead of assuming a larger-looking room is a family option.

Make it your kind of break

ROMANTIC BREAKS

Put the evening on the itinerary

Cullen’s coast, Elgin’s town setting and a Craigellachie meal make different breaks for two. Book the room and dinner that matter, then leave an unhurried afternoon. If whisky is part of the plan, arrange a journey that does not depend on either guest driving afterwards.

FAMILY BREAKS

Make the room layout work first

Seafield has Traditional rooms with an additional single bed and a separate two-bedroom Carriage Cottage, but their floors and layouts differ. Ask the other hotels about exact child arrangements. A beach outing or short town visit can be a better first day than a full chain of timed tours.

A LITTLE ROOM TO EXPLORE

A stay with time for the place

Build the trip around the base you choose, with a realistic arrival and return.

  1. Arrive in the setting you chose

Settle in Elgin, Cullen or Craigellachie with parking and dinner understood. Explore the immediate town or village before adding a second destination.

  2. Give one interest a full day

Choose local history, a coastal outing or a pre-booked Speyside visit. Check the operator and transport, and leave space for lunch and an easy return.

  3. Add one county contrast

With more time, visit a different setting for the day. Keep the final morning near the hotel rather than fitting the coast and several distilleries into the journey home.

Less time? One night suits one base and a focused visit. With two nights, add a single coast-and-inland contrast while keeping time for your chosen town or village.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

A few useful details

Is all of Speyside in Moray?

No. Speyside is a broader geographical and visitor term. This guide selects accommodation physically in Moray and does not treat every Speyside hotel as a county choice.

Is Craigellachie Hotel in Aberlour town?

It is in Craigellachie village. Use the actual village and street when planning meals and transport rather than relying on the wider postal address.

Can I visit distilleries without booking?

Check the particular operator’s current visitor programme and reserve when required. A working distillery is not automatically open for casual tours, and tasting transport needs its own arrangement.

Are Seafield’s family options in the main hotel?

Some are in separate buildings. Carriage Cottage is a first-floor courtyard accommodation with two bedrooms; confirm the exact arrangement and access route before booking.

Which base suits a coastal holiday?

Cullen is the direct coastal comparison. Elgin and Craigellachie can support a planned coast day, but staying inland creates a different daily rhythm and a separate return journey.
