Places to stay in Windsor

Windsor’s most useful accommodation comparison is between the High Street and the river below the castle. Macdonald Windsor offers the first setting; Sir Christopher Wren provides the Eton Bridge alternative. Both can support a town-focused break, but the outlook, building and route back to the room need more attention than the distance to the castle on a map.

FIND YOUR BASE

Choosing your base in Windsor

High Street and the castle side

Macdonald Windsor is the hotel comparison for keeping the upper town and castle visit at the centre of the break. Choose it for the surrounding streets, then treat a castle-view room as a separate decision.

Good for: A castle-led first visit and town evenings.

Before you choose: A hotel close to the castle does not include admission. Confirm the castle’s actual visiting arrangements before fixing the trip.

Thames Street and Eton Bridge

Sir Christopher Wren places the river and pedestrian crossing into Eton in the plan. It can suit a break that gives the riverside as much attention as the castle interior.

Good for: River-focused visitors and time on both sides of the bridge.

Before you choose: The hotel occupies several buildings with different access. A generic reservation does not guarantee a lift-served room.

Eton and the Long Walk as separate outings

Use the Eton Walkway for one part of the visit and the Long Walk for another if time and energy allow. They offer different perspectives, so there is no need to combine every route into one long circuit.

Good for: Two-night stays with room for an outdoor half-day.

Before you choose: A footbridge crossing does not grant entry to Eton College, and the Long Walk is not the same booking as a castle tour.

Make it your kind of break

ROMANTIC BREAKS

Give the river an evening

A short riverside walk and dinner can be enough after the castle. Choose an actual view category if you want to spend time looking out from the room, and check any terrace plans separately.

FAMILY BREAKS

Resolve the room before adding attractions

Sir Christopher Wren lists family and connecting arrangements, but the building and beds vary. Agree those details first, then leave space around one main outing rather than combining the castle and a theme-park day.

A LITTLE ROOM TO EXPLORE

Two nights in Windsor

A suggested short break with room to enjoy your chosen base.

  1. Arrival: choose town or river

Settle luggage and prearranged parking. Use the afternoon for the High Street or a short river walk, keeping the longer attraction visit for a rested morning.

  2. Full day: the castle and breathing space

Use the confirmed castle booking as the day’s anchor. Leave time for lunch and a manageable section of the Long Walk, or cross into Eton if that better fits the group.

  3. Departure: the other side of Windsor

Spend a short final morning beside the river or in Eton before collecting luggage. Check which of Windsor’s stations your onward route uses.

Less time? For one night, choose the castle plus a short river or Long Walk outing. Eton can be a brief visit rather than an obligation to complete the full walkway.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

A few useful details

Are Windsor’s two railway stations interchangeable?

No. Check whether your route uses Windsor & Eton Central or Windsor & Eton Riverside, then plan the final approach with luggage.

Does every Macdonald Windsor room face the castle?

No. Selected suites describe castle views. Confirm the outlook attached to the exact category you reserve.

Will Sir Christopher Wren have lift access?

The operator advises requesting Windsor House for lift access; other buildings differ. Agree your room and route directly before booking.

Can I arrive without arranging parking?

Both shortlisted stays need advance attention to parking. Macdonald’s parking is prebooked; Sir Christopher Wren describes reserved off-site arrangements.

Can I use the Wren riverside terrace?

The current operator FAQ says it is closed. Check again directly if terrace time is important, rather than treating it as a guaranteed feature of the stay.
