Yes, most of it is open. Historic Environment Scotland currently excludes the West Range and two towers. Check its current notice before booking if a particular part is essential to your visit.
Use Castle Road End, DG1 4RU, about eight miles south of Dumfries. WWT Caerlaverock has a different entrance and postcode. For a rail arrival in Dumfries, arrange the onward journey and return in advance.
No. The castle is uphill from the visitor centre, with mixed surfaces and a short steep grass slope after the moat. A paved courtyard route reaches the south range; upper east-range rooms require spiral stairs.
The foundations of the earlier castle are reached by a separate nature trail. Add this after the main courtyard if conditions suit; it extends the visit beyond the more familiar triangular stronghold.
WWT Caerlaverock is a separate, ticketed reserve with hides. Its phased reopening means checking the exact day matters: from 29 September 2026 it plans Tuesday-Saturday opening. There is no café or shop, so bring refreshments. Dumfries’s Robert Burns House is an alternative on its own opening days.
