No. The Trust allocates guided places on arrival, first-come, with groups of no more than ten. Current tours run at intervals and may fill, so check the season and arrive early enough for a possible wait.
Approach from the A980 Alford-to-Banchory road and use the signed main drive. The south drive is closed to visitor vehicles and has no parking, even when a sat-nav suggests it.
There is no direct service to the castle. The Trust suggests buses to Alford, Lumphanan or Aboyne followed by a taxi; arrange both taxi legs in advance because phone reception at the estate can be poor.
The castle entrance has stone steps and upper rooms use steep spiral stairs. The grounds are more accessible, but woodland trails are unsurfaced and can be steep or slippery; request the current access guide before committing to a tour.
Dogs may use the grounds, on short leads near the castle and livestock fields. They cannot join the indoor guided tour unless they are assistance dogs; plan a companion or an outdoor-only visit.
