Travel with a day bag and build rests into the climb. Decide in advance whether the gun is a highlight or something to avoid, and leave the taller or harder routes optional.
A LITTLE ROOM TO EXPLORE
Put Castlehill on the full day, between a Grassmarket arrival and a lighter Leith morning.
Check in and arrange bag storage before walking through Grassmarket towards Castlehill. Reconnoitre the uphill approach without trying to add paid entry late in the day.
Use your booked entry for a measured route through the castle. Include the Great Hall and Crown Square where the current access arrangements suit your party; leave space for breaks before descending.
Make the final morning a change of setting around Leith and the Shore. Return for stored bags with a margin before your onward train rather than adding another fixed-time admission.
Less time? With one night, stay centrally, arrange checkout luggage storage and visit the castle the next morning. Drop the Leith excursion if it competes with your departure.
BEFORE YOU CHOOSE
The castle says no further tickets are available on site when online admission is sold out. Book the intended visit before committing to a tightly timed overnight trip; members and pass holders should also check reservation requirements.
Suitcases and rucksacks of 30 litres or more are not permitted, and the castle has no luggage or pram store. Arrange bag storage with your accommodation before setting out, including after checkout.
The Esplanade is uphill and the route towards Crown Square is a steep, winding cobbled climb. A mobility vehicle can help eligible visitors by arrangement, but it does not make every historic room accessible. Use the detailed access guide to plan a suitable route.
It normally fires at 1pm except on Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas Day. It is loud; plan around it for sound-sensitive visitors. The mobility vehicle does not operate from 12.15pm to 1.15pm because of the firing.
There is no ordinary public parking at the castle. Castle Terrace is the nearest listed public car park, with a further uphill walk. From Waverley the approach is also uphill, so rail arrival and castle entry should not be treated as the same moment.
