Let the first day absorb the travel, then separate the planted garden from Tresco’s rougher northern shoreline.
Settle at The New Inn or Star Castle and confirm the next day’s garden opening and boat arrangements. A St Mary’s hotel booking is not an onward transfer to Tresco.
Allow a substantial garden visit, including the figurehead collection if open. From St Mary’s, keep the confirmed return quay and sailing time in view throughout the day.
On Tresco, the shoreline castle north of New Grimsby is reached on foot over a hillside path. Use daylight and suitable footwear, and omit its steep tower steps if they do not suit. St Mary’s guests should add this only within a workable separate crossing plan.
Less time? For a short stay, concentrate on the garden and your own island base. Skip the northern castle walk if it compromises the last boat or mainland connection.

The operator says New Inn guests receive complimentary Abbey Garden entry throughout their stay. Confirm the garden’s opening for the actual dates; an accommodation benefit does not promise access outside the visitor calendar.
The garden currently asks day visitors to pay on arrival and says advance booking is unavailable. Allow at least two hours inside rather than making the visit only a pause between boat sailings.
