Those choices affect evening meals and the amount of driving, so begin with the places you actually want to visit. Current ferry planning needs particular care: CalMac says Port Ellen is closed from 2 June 2026 until 2029 and the Kennacraig service uses Port Askaig. A room in Port Ellen therefore does not mean arriving beside your hotel.
The Bowmore House on Shore Street is the accommodation comparison for visitors who want Bowmore as the centre of the stay. Use the village for a first evening and choose one direction for each full day rather than repeatedly crossing the island. Ardbeg House offers a hotel-and-dining focus in Port Ellen. It can suit visitors whose main plans are in the south and who want the hotel experience to occupy part of the trip. The village hotel and Ardbeg Distillery are separate places, so reserve any tour and organise transport around it.
Good for: Couples and visitors choosing a southern base with a strong whisky theme.
Before you choose: Port Ellen’s ferry closure changes arrival logistics. Any included distillery tour is subject to opening and availability, and tasting requires a plan that does not depend on driving afterwards.
Port Charlotte: western village evenings
Port Charlotte Hotel is the comparison for visitors who want to spend evenings on the Rhinns side of the island. The Museum of Islay Life offers a local cultural focus alongside landscape outings. This base makes most sense when western Islay is central to the trip rather than a single stop between southern distillery bookings.

Before you choose: Allow for the onward journey from Port Askaig. The hotel’s two ground-floor rooms and single walk-in shower are separate facts; confirm that the room you need combines the necessary features.

From Port Ellen, make one booked southern visit the focus; from Port Charlotte, spend time in the village and western landscape; from Bowmore, choose one direction. Leave generous space for meals and weather rather than attempting an island-wide circuit.
Next day or departure: protect the connection
With another full day, add a contrasting part of Islay. On sailing day, allow for the road journey to Port Askaig, current port works and the operator’s check-in instructions rather than squeezing in a final distant tour.
Less time? For two nights, stay in one village and concentrate on its side of Islay plus the arrival journey. Four or more nights make a broader island stay more comfortable, with separate days for different areas.
