After the castle, spend time beside the Coquet and around the village before dinner. Staying in Warkworth makes that pause easier to keep; from Alnmouth, avoid turning both villages into a list of rushed stops.
A LITTLE ROOM TO EXPLORE
Settle into the river village, give the castle and possible Hermitage visit the middle day, and finish with the beach or Alnmouth.
Walk through the village towards the river and its historic bridge, choosing a comfortable return route to your accommodation or parking. Keep the first evening local to your chosen base.
Explore the castle and Great Tower as the main visit. If the Hermitage is operating on your date, ask about its separately issued on-the-day tickets at the castle; limited boat capacity means it cannot be assumed as an automatic extra.
Give the coast a separate morning, choosing Warkworth Beach from the village or time in Alnmouth if that is your base. Leave enough time to collect luggage and reach the station or onward road route.
Less time? With one night, combine a village-and-river arrival with the castle the next day. Keep the Hermitage and a second village for longer unless their actual schedules fit comfortably.

No. English Heritage currently sells Hermitage tickets separately on the day at Warkworth Castle. Ask about availability before walking to the crossing.
The current operator page lists Sunday and Monday sessions, with limited capacity. Check the calendar for your date and do not use a general castle opening time as the boat timetable.
English Heritage currently limits the boat operation to six people per half-hour. Groups should ask how their visit would work rather than assuming everyone can cross at once.
The operator does not allow dogs at the Hermitage. Check the castle's separate policy and arrange your day so a dog is not left unattended while you cross.
The station is outside the coastal village; National Rail publishes its address as South View, Lesbury. Plan the transfer to your accommodation, especially with luggage; staying in Alnmouth does not mean stepping from the train straight onto Northumberland Street.
