Places to stay in Whitby
Choose Whitby's east side for old-town streets, West Cliff for a clifftop setting, or the station and harbour approach for a simpler arrival. The river and hills make the exact address important: decide how often you want to return to your room before falling for a sea-view photograph.
Choose the east side when browsing the old streets and keeping the abbey end of town close are central to your trip. White Horse & Griffin and April Cottage illustrate two different ways to stay here: an inn room or a whole cottage with a kitchen.
Good for: Couples who want an old-town evening, or groups who prefer their own living space.
Before you choose: Historic buildings can have steep stairs and awkward luggage access. Being below the abbey does not remove the climb to it; ask about the whole route from unloading to bedroom.
West Cliff
This is the first area to compare if a clifftop outlook and time above the beach are the main draw. Royal Whitby provides a hotel option here. Leave space in the day to enjoy the setting rather than commuting between the harbour and your room several times.
Good for: A coastal hotel break, with the option of a specifically booked view.
Before you choose: The harbour is below you. Check your preferred route and gradients, especially for pushchairs or reduced mobility; a view is not a substitute for an accessible approach.
Station, Dock End & the harbour approach
If luggage and a late arrival dominate your decision, start your map search at the station and work outwards along your actual route. This part of the planning is about avoiding an unnecessary crossing or climb before you have settled in. Our current shortlist does not include a station-front property.
Good for: Rail travellers, one-night visitors and people putting arrival convenience first.
Before you choose: Confirm the entrance rather than a postcode centre point. A harbour address can still involve stairs inside, traffic outside or a longer route than the listing photograph suggests.
A wider coastal base
Consider staying outside the town only if your priority is time along the coast or in the surrounding moors. It changes the holiday: Whitby becomes an outing instead of somewhere you can casually return from after dinner.
Good for: Longer stays where a particular rural property or coastal setting is the main reason to book.
Before you choose: Check the evening return as well as the daytime journey. We have not selected an out-of-town property here, so do not treat these Whitby cards as recommendations for the wider coast.

Choose between an evening among Church Street's old buildings and waking above the coast on West Cliff. Book the room category that matters to you, then plan one main outing and a dinner close to your base. Ask about bedroom position if you are sensitive to noise; a picturesque street or sea-view label is not a quietness guarantee.

A family stay with room to pause
April Cottage offers separate bedrooms and a kitchen, but its entrance steps and internal stairs may rule it out for your family. Compare Royal Whitby's family category if a hotel suits you better, checking the exact beds. Plan a harbour outing or abbey visit with a break afterwards, and assess the route with a buggy before booking.
A LITTLE ROOM TO EXPLORE
A two-night Whitby break
Keep the order flexible around weather and arrival. The abbey is a separate paid visit; check opening and access with English Heritage.
Arrival: settle into your side of town
Agree unloading or parking before you arrive, leave your bags and explore the streets nearest your accommodation. Keep dinner local rather than trying to visit both clifftops on your first evening.
Full day: harbour and abbey
Make the abbey your main booked visit if it interests you, using the operator's access guidance to choose your approach. Leave the rest of the day for the harbour and a meal, with time to return to your room. In poor weather shorten outdoor plans.
Departure: one last coastal view
Choose a short outing near your base, perhaps West Cliff if you are staying there, rather than adding another village. Confirm luggage storage and leave room for your onward connection.
Less time? With one night, keep to Whitby itself. Pick the abbey or a leisurely harbour and clifftop visit, then choose accommodation around your evening and arrival needs.

An old-town inn on Church Street for visitors who want to stay among the east-side streets. Room choice matters here because the building has several floors.
Why compare it: A choice for an old-town evening if the stairs and room floor work for you.

An individually identified cottage for a group wanting a kitchen and separate bedrooms in the old town. It is distinct from a bedroom in the neighbouring inn.
Why compare it: Compare this when separate bedrooms and cooking facilities matter enough to accept its stepped entrance and multi-floor layout.
Three bedrooms, with advertised capacity for up to six people.
Kitchen equipment includes an oven, dishwasher and washer dryer.
Bedrooms are upstairs, reached by semi-spiral staircases.
Before you book: The entrance is through a cobbled yard and includes two short flights of stone steps. Check suitability for your group, bed setup and current parking arrangements; the cottage does not promise a reserved space.
Can I leave my car at Whitby Park & Ride overnight?
No. The council's published rules prohibit overnight parking at the Park & Ride site. Arrange parking with your accommodation or check the rules and charges for a suitable town car park. An unloading spot is not an overnight space.
Is the abbey reached only by the 199 steps?
Do not assume the famous steps are the right route for your group. English Heritage provides directions and a detailed access guide for the site. Check those against your arrival method, and contact the attraction about mobility requirements before choosing accommodation around the abbey.
Can I arrive without a car?
Yes, but plan the complete connection. The North York Moors travel guide identifies the Esk Valley Railway between Middlesbrough and Whitby and regional bus options. Check a timetable for your actual date, your final connection and the route from the station to the property.
Should I choose a cottage or hotel?
For cooking and separate bedrooms, compare April Cottage's actual layout. For a hotel room, compare the Royal on West Cliff with White Horse & Griffin in the old town. Cottage space brings a different access tradeoff here: April Cottage has stone entrance steps and bedrooms on upper floors.
