Before you choose: The Esk Valley rail approach is different from a direct city-to-city trip. Plan connections and the last part of the route to your room. A cliff view can mean a climb back after dinner.

Good for: Walkers who want a town evening and couples planning a slower inland break.
Before you choose: Choose a particular walk or attraction and check how you will reach it. A gateway location does not make every part of the National Park convenient; rural bus schedules need checking for your dates.
Consider Skipton if you want town services at the beginning and end of a day outdoors. The National Park identifies its station as an access point for the Dales. Herriots is a hotel option within Skipton, useful to assess before choosing a more remote property.
Good for: Travellers balancing town time with planned Dales outings.
Before you choose: Skipton is not a Dales village in the middle of every walk. Work out your onward route, return connection and equipment needs before booking. Seasonal buses may not run when you need them.
